Furniture Placement in a Living Room

Furniture placement in any room is key to creating an inviting space.  Some simple ideas:  1. Stand in the doorway of the room (the doorway a guest would enter for the first time).  2. Identify the focal point of the room (possibly a fireplace).  3. The largest piece of furniture (usually the sofa) should face the focal point.  4. Arrange the smaller pieces of furniture around the sofa (chairs, coffee table, and end tables etc.).  5. An area rug gives this space a "room within a room" feel.

Hint:  If the sofa is away from the wall, a sofa table placed behind the sofa with accessories such as lamp, table runner, and floral arrangement will soften the look.
