Do Pools Add or Subtract Value of Home?

I've heard pools can actually be a deterrent to buyers.  It is hard to imagine but in your opinion, does a pool hurt or help when selling a home?

I'd say it depends on who you ask and what the condition of the pool is like.

I would imagine that those previewing the property would already have the information that a pool existed on the property before requesting a showing and most signage out front will indicate a pool or spa if buyers are driving by and those who request to see the property are in the market for a pool.  Personally when we re located to TX we wanted a pool because our kids were older and could swim. However when our children were smaller, I specifically did not want a pool because of the security issues involved. So I think it can go both ways.

Each buyer is looking at their 'want' and 'need' lists.  A buyer who has small children and no love for swimming will shy away from a home with a pool.  On the other hand, there are a great many customers looking for properties with a pool.
